Lumen Academy’s English Language Arts program is designed to develop strong readers, thoughtful writers, confident speakers, and independent thinkers. Students are exposed to rich literature, including classic works, high-quality contemporary texts, poetry, nonfiction, and informational reading. Through reading, discussion, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and public speaking, students learn to analyze ideas, express themselves clearly, and communicate with confidence.
Our ELA program is leveled to meet students where they are while moving them toward strong academic outcomes. Students receive the right balance of challenge and support as they build fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, writing structure, grammar, and discussion skills.
Elementary English Language Arts
In the elementary grades, students build strong foundations in reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, handwriting, and oral expression. Instruction focuses on phonics, fluency, comprehension, sentence structure, paragraph development, spelling, grammar, and confidence discussing literature.
Students are introduced to quality literature and increasingly complex texts in age-appropriate ways. They learn to listen carefully, ask questions, retell information, identify main ideas, describe characters and settings, make predictions, and support their thinking with details from the text.

Middle School English Language Arts
In middle school, the ELA program becomes more analytical, structured, and discussion-based. Students read more challenging literature and nonfiction, including classic works, historical texts, essays, poetry, and contemporary selections. They are expected to read closely, identify themes, analyze characters and author’s craft, compare texts, and support interpretations with evidence.
Writing instruction becomes more formal and intentional. Students learn to plan, draft, revise, and edit literary analysis, persuasive essays, personal narratives, research-based writing, summaries, speeches, and creative pieces. Emphasis is placed on thesis statements, topic sentences, transitions, evidence, elaboration, organization, and clarity.
Discussion, rhetoric, and public speaking are important parts of the middle school ELA experience. Students learn to participate thoughtfully in class discussions, present ideas clearly, listen respectfully, and support their opinions with evidence.
