Mathematics

Lumen Academy’s mathematics curriculum is based on the instructional philosophy of the Russian School of Mathematics (RSM), a rigorous, coherent K–12 program inspired by the traditions of elite mathematics schools and adapted for American students. The curriculum is built on the belief that mathematics is not merely a collection of computational skills, but one of the strongest tools for developing logical reasoning, abstract thinking, creativity, perseverance, and intellectual confidence. Students are encouraged to understand why mathematical ideas work, not simply how to perform procedures.

Program Pillars & Instructional Philosophy

Core Program Goals

  • Fluency & Understanding: Developing strong mathematical comprehension alongside procedural fluency.
  • Logical Problem Solving: Thinking analytically to solve complex, non-routine mathematical problems.
  • Clear Reasoning: Articulating and defending mathematical arguments using precise notation and language.
  • Academic Readiness: Fostering persistence and intellectual confidence for advanced high school mathematics.

Instructional Emphasis

  • Concept Before Algorithm: Establishing conceptual depth before procedural memorization.
  • Depth Over Breadth: Exploring ideas deeply through multiple solution pathways and flexible reasoning.
  • Concrete to Abstract: A seamless, structured progression from physical models to formal abstraction.
  • Cumulative Mastery: Regular, ongoing review of previously learned concepts integrated into new material.

Spiral Methodology

  • Interconnected Disciplines: Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and probability reinforce each other continuously.
  • Continuous Progression: One coherent sequence from Kindergarten through Grade 8, revisiting topics with increasing sophistication.
  • Long-Term Assessment: Evaluation focused on multi-step reasoning, cumulative understanding, and synthesis.

Primary Years (Kindergarten – Grade 2)

Students develop strong number sense and mental math agility while establishing habits of mathematical reasoning and early algebraic inquiry. Students begin explaining and justifying their thinking from the earliest grades.

Kindergarten

Foundational numeracy and early logic:

  • Number Sense: Counting, quantity comparison, and place value concepts.
  • Operations: Concrete addition and subtraction foundations.
  • Spatial & Logic: Pattern identification, geometric shapes, measurement, and early logic puzzles.

Grade 1

Fluency, structure, and early modeling:

  • Addition & Subtraction: Operational fluency and place value mastery.
  • Algebraic Thinking: Introduction to equality, number sentences, and early equations.
  • Foundations: Early multiplication concepts, geometric exploration, measurement, and multi-step word problems.

Grade 2

Multi-digit operations and variables:

  • Arithmetic: Multi-digit addition and subtraction, foundations of multiplication and division.
  • Fractions & Variables: Introduction to fractional parts and modeling with algebraic variables.
  • Geometry & Logic: Perimeter and area basics, equation solving, and deductive reasoning.

Intermediate Years (Grades 3 – 5)

Students transition systematically from arithmetic toward formal algebraic thinking, non-routine problem solving, and deeper geometric exploration.

Grade 3
